We say this is a downside like there is no other option, but there is! Why not build a humidor of your own to give you a unique, one of a kind, handmade and low cost cigar humidor?

Sounds great but you are probably wondering how to go about making your own cigar humidor, well today we will go through the step by step requirements so you can make your own humidor.

Build A Cigar Humidor In 14 Easy Steps!

This is wood using project that is great for anyone of a beginner status.

Materials required for the build:

• Battery powered small humidifier unit
• ¼ inch large pieces of wood
• Rubber mallet
• Dowel pins
• Square wooden dowel rods
• Saw
• Drill with drill bit at same size as your dowel pins
• 2 x hinges and screws

Here Are The Actual Steps On How To Build a Humdor:

1. Measure out two pieces of wood at 400 mm by 200 mm and cut out using the saw
2. Drill two holes (not all the way through the wood) at the top and bottom of each end a few millimetres from the outside edge on the flat of the wood (fig 1.)
3. Measure out two pieces of wood at 200 mm by 200 mm and cut out using the saw
4. Drill two holes (not all the way through the wood) at the same height and measurements from the inside edge on the actual thickness of the wood (fig. 2)
5. Measure out two pieces of wood at 413 mm by 213 mm and cut out using the saw (this will be the top and bottom of the humidor)
6. Take the dowel pins and knock them into the holes made in the first two wooden pieces using the rubber mallet then add the second two wooden pieces to the other side’s – you should now have a wooden square (fig. 3)
7. Place your humidifier in the inside corner of the square and measure the space taken on the length of the box
8. Mark out and drill two holes parallel at each side of the inside of the square where you have just marked from the humidifier – if required also mark where a digital display on the humidifier may need to be shown on the outside of the humidor and cut the relevant sized hole
9. Add dowel pins to each of the four holes
10. Cut 2 square wooden dowel rods to 200 mm and drill holes in each end then knock these onto the dowel pins inside the square
11. Take one of the 413 mm by 213 mm wooden pieces and drill holes (not all the way through the wood) at each corner some 4 mm in from the outside edge
12. Place the 413 mm by 213 mm wooden piece under your square and mark out on the bottom of the square where the four drill holes on the 413 mm by 213 mm piece meet
13. Drill four holes (not all the way through the wood) in the bottom of the wooden square, knock in four dowel pins and then add the bottom to the square – you should now be left with a box
14. Finally screws the two hinges on to the top rear of your cigar humidor and then onto the rear edge of your top piece (413 mm by 213 mm) giving you a lid

Many people may not know how to use a humidor correctly. For a cigar lover, it is quite necessary to have a humidor because it can store cigars and also helps it to age so that it can be used for many years. In the beginning you would need to use distilled water to dampen the clean cloth. The cloth should be soaked in water all through but should not be dripping wet. With this damp cloth you should wipe down the interior of the humidor. This will help to season the cedar and then ensure that the humidity level inside the humidor remains constant.

Next you can put the wet cloth within the humidor by placing it on top of the plastic wrap. Ensure that the cloth does not touch the wood or else the wood will turn rotten. After that you can fill distilled water into the humidification device. Any excess moisture should be wiped off from the outer area of the device. When this is done place it inside the humidor.

For about 24 hours the humidor should be closed and allowed to sit. This will help the cedar to absorb moisture and also season further. After that for a second time you can again wipe the inside area of the humidor using damp cloth. Remove the cloth from inside and close the humidor and wait for another 24 hours. This is how to use a humidor if you want your cigars to last longer.

Now it is ready and you can place the cigars inside. Always maintain proper humidity level within the humidor. You need to store the cigars at room temperature which has humidity level of approximately 68 to 72 percent. If the humidity level decreases then you can add more distilled water into the humidification device.

This will help to maintain the correct percentage of humidity within the humidor which will prevent the cigars from getting spoild. As a matter of fact, if you want better flavors in your cigars then you should allow it to age in the humidor. However, if you do not want to age them you can still use it as storage and enjoy the cigars. So, did you understand how to use a humidor?

The worst thing about smoking a cigar when is when it starts to crumble in your hands. Someone has committed a serious crime! It has lost its moisture, most likely because someone didn’t store it properly.

Using a small container with a sealed lid you will put your cigar hygrometer inside along with a smaller container filled with salt that has been moistened but not saturated with distilled water. You only want to moisten the salt and not liquefied to get the best results. Once this has been done you will close the lid and let it sit for at least 6 hours.

After this time you will then remove the humidor hygrometer and check the percentage. It should read between 68-72% percent relative humidity. If it doesn’t, you will want to adjust your hygrometer by using a miniature screwdriver inserted in the back. Adjust the needle to point to 70% and you should be ready to go.

While humidors can cost a good amount, the best cheap humidors are entirely dependent on your definition of the word “cheap.”  But before we go talking about price, perhaps we should define exactly what a humidor is, and why you would need one.

What is a Humidor?

A humidor is a box that has been specially made to hold cigars and to maintain the proper humidity level for the cigars.  Humidors have two parts; a box that holds the cigars and some sort of device that controls the humidity level.  You can find humidors in a seemingly infinite number of sizes, but there are a few things that any decent humidor (regardless of its price) should have in common if they are going to do the job of keeping the cigar properly stored.
